NLL Preview Buffalo Bandits

The Bandits finished 8-8 last season, making the playoffs as the third seed. They lost to the eventual east champions Toronto Rock in the first round. The Bandits made the playoffs on the last day of the season, beating the Boston Blazers to clinch.
Buffalo had a terrific year from Mark Steenhius, who finished fourth in the league in scoring with 90 points and 36 goals. Steenhius was looking to prove himself in elite player in this league, scoring 101 goals the previous season. Steenhius was also second in the league with 175 shots on goal, second to only John Grant.
Buffalo's next leading goal scorer was 37th in the league, and it was the 42 year old John Tavares. Tavares, a Bandit since 1992 and a future hall of famer, scored 49 points and was second on the team. He scored 21 goals and 28 assits.
Buffalo's next three top scorers were Mike Accursi, Kevin Dostie, and Brett Bucktooth. Buffalo was third in the East in goals scored, scoring more than Boston, Rochester, and Philadelphia. But their goals again est was also third in the east with 170 GA. One of their goaltenders, Mike Thompson, had a 9.92 GAA. The other two goaltenders for the Bandits, Ken Montour and Angus Goodleaf, had 10.89 and 10.75 GAAs, respectively.
Buffalo played more overtime games than anyone last season in the east, winning two and losing one. Their wins were a thrilling win over Toronto, and a nailbaiter in Boston. Their loss came vs Colorado. Buffalo had only one winning streak all season, and that was a three game winning streak vs Orlando, Toronto and Boston.
Buffalo has made some good acquisitions this offseason. They signed former Boston Blazer Brenden Thenhaus and Kyle Clancy, who was the Bandits first round pick last season. Buffalo also drafted Travis Irving with their ninth overall pick, and also drafted Ben McCollough.
Buffalo is going to have a tough time in the east this season. Orlando is gone, but Toronto is still there and Boston is much improved. The Bandits will make the playoffs, but probably no higher than a third seed. Buffalo will now be three years removed from their 2008 championship, and need to start a whole new dynasty this season.

Toronto Aquires Pat Merrill

Today the Toronto Rock signed free agent Pat Merril. Here is the press release.

The Toronto Rock Lacrosse Club have acquired unrestricted free agent and former Orlando Titans defender Patrick Merrill to a four year deal this week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Introduced into the NLL as a Rock player in 2003, Merrill played in Toronto for the first five seasons of his career until he was picked up second overall by the New York Titans during the 2007 Expansion Draft.
Being very familiar with the coaching staff in Rock assistant coach and GM Terry Sanderson, Patrick is looking forward to playing for Toronto again.

“I’m extremely thrilled to be back playing for the Rock organization” Merrill says. “It’s a very strong team on the floor and a first class organization off the floor. I know the Rock ownership, coaching staff and players put winning first and that is very important to me.”

The assistant captain and defenseman spent two seasons as a Titan in New York before the team moved to Florida where he spent the 2010 season with the Orlando Titans and tallying 13 regular season points (1 goal, 12 assists). Along with his Titans squad, Patrick appeared in two NLL playoff games in 2010, the second of which was the East Division final where the Toronto Rock defeated the Titans 15-10 and pushed them into the Championship game.

Having coached him in the past during summer lacrosse, Sanderson and head coach Troy Cordingley know Merrill is comfortable with the way they run the defense and are big fans of the way he plays the game.

“He plays with an edge that in a way makes us a harder team to compete against” says Sanderson, “and brings a great wealth of leadership qualities that you really can’t have enough of.”

Merrill, 31, has appeared in the NLL playoffs every season he’s played in the League. Two of these playoff years were with the Rock that also led to NLL Champions Cup titles. The first in 2003 when the Rock defeated the Rochester Knighthawks and most recently the 2005 season when he was a part of the Championship victory for the Rock over the Arizona Sting at the Air Canada Centre.

‘It was an amazing experience to be a part of two Championship teams with the Rock and I’m really hoping to help this team bring another to the great lacrosse fans of Toronto” Merrill adds.

Patrick, along with his Toronto Rock teammates will kick off the 2011 regular season against his younger brother Brodie Merrill and the Edmonton Rush. The Rock home opener takes place on Saturday January 8th at 7:00 p.m. ET at the Air Canada Centre

Schedule Update: Look out for the Roughnecks preview tomorrow.

Titans to Sell for $1.4 mm

Ken Rosenbach has put the Orlando Titans franchise up for sale for $1.4 mm.

“Today’s announcement was a very hard one for me to make,” said Rosenbach. “I am first and foremost a fan of professional indoor lacrosse and have done everything within my means to help the sport grow and succeed in both Orlando and New York. However, it saddens me to say that it’s time for me to pass the torch on to someone else who shares my passion for the sport and the desire to see the Titans succeed.”

The last National Lacrosse League Franchise to be sold was the Rochester Knighthawks in 2008, where they sold in between $3 mm and $5.75 mm.

More Orlando Titans Aftermath

As expected, there is a lot more in the aftermath of the folding of the Orlando Titans, including the draft order in tomorrow's dispersal draft. However as it was expected tomorrow, it may be held out into next week because of the players wanting to terminate their contract. The order of the draft is expected to look like this:
Colorado (expected to select Casey Powell)
Boston (via the Max Seibald trade)
Rochester
Minnesota
Philadelphia
Buffalo
Edmonton
Calgary
Toronto
Washington.
Philadelphia and Boston will flip-flop their positioning in later rounds due to trades and acquisitions that allow Boston to currently be ahead of Philadelphia.
It is also believed now that Matt Vinc may terminate his contract with Orlando.

Titans to Fold

It's always a sad day when a franchise folds, but it's hard to say I didn't expect it. Today the Orlando Titans folded. I am not surprised because I attended an Orlando Titans playoff game this season only to a crowd of 4,000 maybe. Right then I knew the NLL would not survive in Florida.
It is unclear whether it is a full fold for the Titans, or if they are just going to sit out the season. It is known, however, that the Titans will hold a dispersal draft Friday, with Casey Powell likely to be selected by the Colorado Mammoth or Philadelphia Wings.
Players such as Jordon Hall, Pat Merrill, Rory Smith, and Pat Maddalena are looking to terminate their contracts with the Titans franchise.
There has been speculation of the Titans franchise stability all week now, and we finally know.

Orlando Titans Future Still Up in the Air.

I never thought it was a good idea having an NLL team in Florida. There should be be a team in Vancouver or Ottawa still.
Anyways, the Orlando Titan's future is up in the air after finishing the season with the best record in the east. The reason for this is that the Titans owner Gary Rosenbach is decreasing his interest in the team after moving it from New York. The Titans have a deadline of August 1st to decide what they are going to do, but sources say that the team is optimistic they will stay in Orlando and play the 2011 season.
A sign, though, that the team may fold is the decrease of roster movement this off-season in the NLL. That may show that teams are expected a dispersal draft.
I also wonder what this means for Casey Powell's future. He skipped this year's MLL season and the FIL. I wonder what his NLL future holds if the Titans fold?

NLL Final Scores

Last night the Toronto Rock beat the Orlando Titans to clinch a trip to the Champions Cup. The Rock went up early, 3-1, before Orlando stormed back to take a 5-3 lead. The Rock swarmed back and scored seven goals in the third quarter alone. The Rock dominated play in the second half and picked up the 15-10 win.
It was a much tighter game in Everett as the Washington Stealth beat the Edmonton Rush 12-11 in overtime, ironically the same score when these two teams met for the last time in the regular season. The Rush scored two goals in the final 56 seconds to tie it and came back from a fourth quarter three goal deficit. The Stealth would lead by five in the second quarter, but the Rush resiliently came back. The Stealth scored eight seconds into the OT, a goal from Paul Rabil to beat Matt Disher.

Next week the Washington Stealth will host the Toronto Rock for the Champions Cup. The game will be Saturday, May 15 at 10:30 pm. You can watch the game on Versus at 2 pm the next day.

Week 15 NLL Picks

Here are my predictions for this week's games:

Buffalo Bandits @ Orlando Titans
This is an interesting game. Buffalo could use the win, and Orlando can clinch a playoff spot. I say Buffalo pulls this out. Bandits

Boston Blazers @ Colorado Mammoth
Again, this is a game the Blazers need. Colorado is fighting Minnesota for a playoff spot though. I say Boston wins. Blazers

Rochester Knighthwaks @ Toronto Rock
The Knighthawks could easily find themselves in a playoff position with a win. I say Toronto wins a tough game in OT. Rock

Calgary Roughnecks @ Edmonton Rush
I love the Rush. They've played well, so I'll take them over the newly clinched Roughnecks. Rush

Philadelphia Wings @ Minnesota Swarm
The Swarm are falling out of playoff contention fast. I say they're swoon continues with a loss to Philly. Wings

Edmonton Rush @ Washington Stealth
A good matchup here. I think the Stealth win here. Stealth

NLL Game Preveiws and Chat Post

Here are your NLL games for today:
Minnesota Swarm @ Boston Blazers
The Blazers are looking for a win today to stay in the playoff chase. With a loss Rochester would jump into the playoff picture, and they play the Wings today, a chance for a win, so the Blazers need to win to stay afloat.
Minnesota lost to the Knighthawks last night, so they need a win and Colorado loss to clinch a playoff berth.

Toronto Rock @ Buffalo Bandits
The Bandits could use a win as well, in the same situation as Boston. The Rock look to clinch a playoff berth with a win.

Washington Stealth @ Orlando Titans
The two top teams in each division, the Stealth look to clinch a first round home game. The Titans look to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

Philadelphia Wings @ Rochester Knighthawks
The Wings need a win to keep their small playoff hopes alive, while the Knighthawks can put themselves in a good position.

Colorado Mammoth @ Calgary Roughnecks
A win here would get the 'Necks in the 2010 NLL playoffs. But a loss would keep the Mammoth in it.

Talk about the games here tonight!
